008 Things Aquired - [text;]

So here's a question for all of you. What's the furthest you've been from home? Before coming here, I mean. This place doesn't count. I want to know how far people have traveled before coming here.

The name of the place you're from, the name of the place you like going. What your favorite city is called. Things like that.

I've always liked traveling. But I used to spend years in one place, even so. Always found myself drawn back to where I was born. It's one of those interesting things about people. I don't exactly miss the place, but I do find myself thinking about it sometimes. What it would be like if we could go back with memories of this place instead of forgetting everything.

So there's a second part of my question, I guess.

Say you go home, but you remember everything from here. What would you do with that information?

What if you arrived home at a time before the last thing you remember?

A better question is "where haven't I traveled", really. My world is an expansive place, and I've put quite a bit of effort toward seeing as much of it as I can.

As for your second question — you're suggesting using something you've learned here to change your future, aren't you?
doitrockapella: (BOW ❖ holy shit was that an honorific)

Let's play at being optimistic, then, If it were possible, and you had the opportunity, would you do it?

You're quite the poet, you know.

Do you have any idea what happened to her without you?

Is it the same woman you've told me about before?

[She doesn't think it is, from the differences in how he's described the circumstances, but.]

And you regret what happened, now, for her sake — even if not for your own.

There weren't many places to go, before we learned to ride dragons. It's all ocean around Berk. Even now I've mostly just been to other islands, all smaller than my own.

I've been back there, since coming here. I did remember this place, but it all seemed like a dream. It wouldn't have helped me any to tell anyone about here, but I would look for it, sometimes. Just in case.

[There were...plenty of things he'd change if he went home, depending on how far back he could go. But it was best not to dwell on that.]

For what it's worth, that's not an uncommon regret to have. Sometimes it's easy to get caught up in your own affairs, and miss the way they might affect other people.

If you don't mind my asking, is that something you do often? Acting without regard for how it'll affect others?
berkthorn: (have a nICE trip)

There are! My best friend's a dragon.

[...Which he can't tell if that makes it sound more cool or more sad, but oh well. What's typed is typed, and he certainly thinks it's cool.]

It must be. People come in from different times too so asking this place to be consistent is pretty useless.

Exactly. I was already mostly convinced of that myself, so it's possible that if I had talked about it, I would have had to forget about it by dismissing it as fake.
berkthorn: commissioned! please don't take! (forever dragonfriend)

[personal profile] berkthorn 2014-08-11 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I don't know about that. My dragons certainly seem dragon-y to me. Not exactly the same, sure, but close enough, and I wouldn't be surprised if I found dragons more like them back home, eventually. We discover new ones all the time.

Unfortunately, if my bud came here, he'd be turned into a human, so it's not so easy to show you. What's a chimera?

You should consider yourself lucky. The first time I came here, no one could remember a thing. That there's any memory at all now is a blessing.

...There's a difference between taking actions that result in people being hurt, and taking them with a willful disregard for the fact that people might be hurt at all.

Sometimes you can't help but hurt people you care about. The fact that you said you were trying to keep her alive tells me that, whether you think so or not, you did take her into account to some extent — you couldn't have been trying to save her if you weren't thinking of her on some level in the first place.

To have abandoned her without ever stopping to consider that it'd affect her at all...that, I think, would be a worse crime entirely.

I went to Mars.
Only for something like three hours, and I was getting shot at the whole time, but it's still the furthest from Earth I've gone.
And I guess I'd have a lot of stories to tell people, though they'd start thinking I'm crazy quickly enough. Not that I'd blame them.
berkthorn: (this is an intervention)

[personal profile] berkthorn 2014-08-11 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it definitely took him some getting used to the last time he was here... That was ages ago, now. He's used to have retractable teeth, so he wound up biting his lip a lot, and he couldn't fly or speak. I met another dragon here that was able to talk like a human, though.

I see.
[He doesn't really get it, but he's got the feeling that it's something along the lines of "taking apart corpses", in terms of queasiness.] They must not be very common either then, I would think.

[He would...hope...]

Moving away from the Sun, it's the planet right after Earth. After that you have Jupiter.
There are human colonies around there, but it's not exactly a place that's visited often. Especially because of the war.

I sure hope not, because I can't think of anything crazier than the creepy castle, and around here that's just par for the course.
