NAME: Greed
AGE: 300
CANON: Fullmetal Alchemist (2003)
CANON HISTORY: here, the 2003 anime section only
CANON PERSONALITY: Like his name suggests, he's greedy. He says himself that he wants everything the world has to take. Women, money, status, power, eternal life-- he wants all of it. He's monumentally selfish and knows it and doesn't really care at all about Dante's goals. He claims he doesn't want to become human, and he also doesn't want to exist as her pawn.
Having been created from the remains of Dante's human lover, Greed more than likely has access to his human memories just as the other homunculi are shown to have, though they're not indicated in the show itself. One can speculate, however, that most if not all of the memories he has have to deal with Dante and being her lover given his behavior towards her—he's unable to harm Ed knowing that Dante is watching him and he inevitably finds himself drawn back to the place where he was born. It's part the fact that he really wants attention and also partially the fact that he desperately wants her attention in particular.
Somehow, despite being the homunculus that has spent the most time isolated and alone to think about revenge, Greed manages to be the least psychopathic of the seven homunculi. He's reasonably stable and though he doesn't seem especially bothered by the prospect of having to hurt or kill people, he does go out of his way to avoid it except in very specific circumstances, saying that it's "not his style." Included in this is his specific desire to avoid hurting women, which might have to do with his attachment to Dante.
Remarkably, despite his name being Greed and avarice being a key part of his personality, Greed genuinely seems to care for his friends. The chimera that he rescues from Lab 5 become incredibly loyal to him and he in turn is protective of them, urging his followers not to go through with suicidal attacks. It's probably in large part due to his own greed and selfishness that he dislikes seeing people be so selfless for his own sake. He's greedy and selfish and has trouble understanding why someone would want to die for him because he certainly doesn't want to die for someone else. Even so, he is clearly shown to mourn the loss of his followers and he urges Al to protect Martel after the death of the other chimera, also letting Al go in turn which effectively ends his search for getting his spirit attached to armor.
Maybe it's because he found himself getting attached to Al that he decided not to hurt him after all, it's not entirely clear, but it would make sense because he also knowingly engages in a fight with Ed that was extremely likely to end in his own death. To help Ed out and throw the ultimate wrench in Dante's plans, he's willing to die to give the information that the alchemist needs in order to defeat the other homunculi. That sheer amount of self-sacrifice seems to be the antithesis of what Greed exists to be, but it's also not entirely surprising that a greedy man would ultimately want to die on his own terms rather than be imprisoned for centuries once more.
It's not accurate to call him a "good" person because of his selfishness and the fact that he was willing to kill Al to figure out how a spirit attachment is done, but his bond with the chimera is proof that he does genuinely care about people, as is the fact that he eventually let Al go when he was certain that his confrontation with Dante would end in the loss of his life. He's selfish but not unnecessarily cruel; this is an important distinction. He's not "good" but he's also not evil either, floating somewhere in between. He is extremely loyal to the chimeras he broke out of Lab 5 and would absolutely never betray them even in a situation where it would be advantageous for him to do so.
Greed's hideout with the chimera is in the basement of a dingy bar called The Devil's Nest, which says that he's not afraid of hanging out with outlaws. Unlike the other homunculi who treat humans like something beneath them, Greed is at least capable of a somewhat civil discussion. He makes it clear that he's extremely strong and not someone to be messed with, but he also is fairly content being around outlaws. He's shown with his arms around human women in the hideout while discussing what to do about Wrath. In general, he seems capable of genuinely getting along with people so long as they don't treat him like trash for being a homunculus or otherwise try to provoke him.
Despite his long life and despite experience that would indicate he should know better, Greed is quick to trust certain people. It doesn't happen often, but when it does happen, he's very protective of the people who have allied with him and he has a tendency to take betrayal extremely personally. It can be difficult to gain his trust, but once a person does, he's a fairly trusting man and that is something incredibly exploitable— he was genuinely blindsided by Kimbley's betrayal despite earlier banter that seemed to hint towards him not entirely trusting the man.
A final thing to note would be the suicidal inclinations of homunculi in the original anime; it’s not that Greed would actively be looking to end his life and indeed it’s actually the opposite to a certain extent—he wants to live. However, in spite of this, homunculi are born with the innate knowledge that they are created because somebody died, and because of that they are prone to despair. Greed is never directly shown having the problem himself, but he’s one of the only homunculi not shown having this problem so it’s safe to say he is capable of feeling misery; he’s just not as immediately prone to it for the time being. Important to note that while he doesn’t go looking to end his life for most of his appearance in canon, he does provoke Ed into killing him.
SKILLS/ABILITIES: Greed’s primary ability is something he calls “the Ultimate Shield” and involves changing the chemistry of his body such that his skin becomes diamond-hard and virtually impervious to physical damage. He is also capable of regenerating from any wound, even fatal ones, because of the shards of Philosopher’s Stones in his stomach. Different from his manga/Brotherhood counterparts, he ingests the Philosopher’s Stone shards rather than having a Stone at his core.
Additionally, because of the stone shards inside of him, Greed is capable of regenerating from even the most ludicrously fatal of injuries.
He’s also shown to be able to jump to ludicrous heights, though he can’t leap to the top of a skyscraper like he’s in The Matrix or anything like that, more like he can jump from limb to limb of a tree.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Darius Chase
AU AGE: 33
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: While he still has the spiked up hair—though that is probably gel as opposed to natural this time around—that is about the only major thing that remains of Greed. Darius has brown eyes without any creepy slit pupils, and lacks the horrible shark teeth.
Also missing, of course, is the ouroboros on his left hand.
He’s also far less muscular than his canon self. He’s fit, but more in the line of a guy who spends time in a gym than someone who spends all of his time fighting.
Additionally, since homunculus physiology is shown to be fairly different to that of humans, Darius completely lacks all of that.

AU HISTORY: While Darius makes a point of never talking about his past, that doesn’t mean that his past is particularly terrible. And when it is, it’s largely his own fault. He had a normal upbringing, and while he doesn’t speak to his parents any more, they’re probably alive? Still, he doesn’t really speak with them and would get annoyed at anyone who tells him he should just because.
At one point he met a woman, fell in love, spent a long time with her, and then proceeded to really, really screw up the relationship somehow—either legitimately, or something perceived by the ex-girlfriend in question. Because of the shady dealing the two of them were involved with, that largely involved selling and buying various items that were less-than-legally obtained, Darius decided the best course of action for him to be to get the hell out of dodge as soon as possible. Though he and his girlfriend didn’t break up under anything approaching good circumstances, she never sent anyone after him, though that didn’t stop Darius from believing that was a possibility.
As a result, he spent a good six years moving from place to place before finally deciding on Recollé, where he then did his best to hide as much of his criminal past as possible. He’s been in the city for the past three years, and has done a decent job for himself at not being shady as heck. He’s not perfect at it, as he does still deal in the occasion ill-gotten goods, or hiding a criminal (unless they’re a murderer; Darius doesn’t really take kindly to those) but for the most part, he’s able to skirt past the police for no reason other than the fact that they honestly can’t prove he’s up to much, despite having suspicions—Darius follows the law when it comes to his bar strictly, and any ill-gotten goods are usually passed off to someone else before it can be easily traced back to Darius.
Who knows how long it’ll last, but he’s unfortunately less-than concerned about getting caught for the foreseeable future.
Darius’ childhood was completely ordinary. No bad parenting, nothing horrible hidden in his past. He wouldn’t talk about because there’s honestly not much to talk about, though he welcomes the rumors because they’re funny. That, and he doesn’t consider the jailtime he spent entirely noteworthy.
Before meeting his ex-girlfriend, he was mostly involved in petty crime-- theft, vandalism. Nothing violent. He mostly went down the road out of sheer boredom and a mixture of "just 'cause" and "it seems like fun." As a result of this his grades suffered a lot in high school, so he just naturally started to run with a rougher crowd. Petty crimes never really evolved into violent crimes, though Darius would be honest about the fact that that probably doesn’t matter in the grand scheme since he’s started to deal with stolen high-value items that probably were acquired with violent means. Still, hurting people was just one of those bridges he was willing to cross—he was young, stupid, and this was before he started working out. This eventually became something of a known principle of his, but at the time it was mostly because he was about 15 and being confronted by the big guy who owns the electronics store is intimidating.
His parents were naturally exasperated and did what they could to stop his behavior, but that didn’t do much to deter a young Darius away from crime. As a result, he gained a reputation for thinking he is awesome, despite actually having a criminal record because he was still a teenager when he started down the crime path, and that’s what lead him to meeting his ex-girlfriend. It was less of a situation of him being untouchable as it was about this guy thinking he’s hot shit and actually he’s pretty all right when he’s not being arrogant.
Darius’ ex-girlfriend was intrigued, and because they ran in the same circles, he did eventually meet her in his early twenties. Aware of his reputation for thinking things were fun, the fact that he’s actually pretty brash, and his distaste of violent crime, she told him of her scheme of buying and selling high-price stolen items to make some cash. Always looking for his own brand of “fun”, Darius agreed. She was the one to help calm him down a little, and focus him in on something closer to organized crime than his current small-time theft.
His bar, naturally, is his pride and joy. It has a tongue-in-cheek name of “Providence” that has a reputation for its decent food, despite how much of an oddball Darius is, and its fairly friendly staff. The bar is Darius’ home, as well—he lives upstairs in the apartment space above, so he can always be nearby. He doesn’t really have a reason why he needs to live where he works, but anyone who asks will get the honest answer: convenience.
AU PERSONALITY: Darius’ personality is remarkably close to that of Greed’s. Greed’s lack of a real understanding of humanity—despite really liking people—has been replaced by Darius’ social awkwardness. He’s a little awkward around people, though just like Greed he still likes them a lot. He suffers from an unfortunate tendency to put his foot in his mouth, though Darius is still a man who likes people. First and foremost, he’s the sort of person who likes to be surrounded by people, and eventually he learned one of the best ways to do that was to open a bar.
Is that kind of strange of him? Probably. But while Darius doesn’t know a whole lot about cooking, he’s managed to make a decent following for himself just by being creative with his drink mixing and his outgoing personality. He likes being around other people, and wants other people to like being around him. Which he’s not the sort to try and force friendship upon others, he’s not far off from being that sort of person—aggressively befriending people, especially people who step foot inside his bar, is just the sort of thing he likes doing.
Even if his employees think it’s a horrible idea.
Darius isn’t all brightness—he still has a dark side, given his propensity to work with criminals. While he does have a fairly strict no-kill policy personally, and looks down on others who would commit murders, he can be a vicious person when it comes right down to it. He’s not much of a fighter—while he has gotten into fist-fights in the past, he’s lost fights about as much as he’s won them. A part of him just really enjoys getting into brawls more than it cares whether or not he actually wins, which has lead to him getting nasty injuries in the past, which he almost always brushes off.
The end result is a man who is perhaps a little too carefree.
Be it something bad or something good, Darius has a tendency to take it all in stride. About the only thing that’s something he takes seriously is when someone he considers a friend is in trouble. It doesn’t even have to be major trouble, but Darius is the sort of man who looks out for his friends. He might be on the selfish side, but if you mess with his friends? You mess with him.
